Steve Purvis

Steve Purvis (Class of 2002)is from St. Johns, MI, and is currently employed at General Motors. His career at GM started in 1997 when he was hired as a co-op Electrical Engineer
working in the Lansing stamping plant. He has worked in a variety of different departments, mostly engineering and maintenance, at both the Lansing plant and the Flint stamping
plant, where he transferred when the Lansing plant was starting to close. He is a registered Professional Engineer in the state of Michigan and, in 2008, Steve completed his Master’s
degree in Electrical Engineering. Steve is currently a Senior Controls Engineer helping design, troubleshoot, and install control systems. When he has free time, he likes to help restore a 1924 Model T with his dad, spend time with his wife, Lisa, and daughter, Anna, volunteering at his church, doing home repairs, and working on his motorcycle and vehicles in his shop. When he was making his decision to join Phi Gamma Delta, a big factor in his decision was being a part of the group who recolonized A section. He was attracted to the fact that he could have a big role in shaping the house. Steve’s jobs in the house as an undergraduate included Corresponding Secretary, Academic Chair, and IFC Representative, though he also helped the House Managers and Pledge Educators from time to time. One of his favorite memories is when one of his pledge brothers and he pushed a couch out of one of the windows in Delta and set it on the ledge of the house facing Ballenger Park and Dupont Street and they would smoke cigars while listening to Led Zeppelin. His pledge class stays in pretty good contact with each other, getting together every once in a while for dinner. In the past few months, Steve has joined the BCA and has been involved in the structural reinforcement project and replacing the roof. The most important things he has taken away from his time in FIJI are learning how to work with other people and learning that sometimes you have to figure stuff out all on your own with little or no direction.  These lessons have been very helpful throughout his life, whether it’s learning how to bleed the boiler pipes so that they can have heat in the winter or working on a project at work. Above everything else, the friends that Steve made in FIJI are the best friends he has ever made in his life, proving yet again that Phi Gamma Delta is “Not For College Days Alone.” We are very proud to call men like Steve our brother!
